What Does The Agender Pride Flag Mean?

The Agender Pride Flag is a symbol of neutrality, absence, and the freedom to exist outside the gender binary. For many, it represents a journey of self-discovery where gender is simply not a defining characteristic of identity.

If you are agender, non-binary, or perhaps exploring what gender means to you, seeing your identity represented in art and community is a vital affirmation that your choices are valid. At Real Belonging, we believe that "invisible" identities deserve as much visible, joyful celebration as anyone else.

The History and Design

Created by the agender, panromantic, demisexual, New York-based artist Salem X (they/she) in 2014, the Agender flag features seven horizontal stripes. Each color carries a specific meaning:

  • Black and White Stripes: Represent the absence of gender.
  • Gray Stripes: Represent the semi-genderless or gender-neutral spectrum.
  • Green Stripe: Represents the non-binary spectrum (green is the inverse of purple, the traditional color of the binary).

Why Representation Matters

In a world that often defaults to "male" or "female," agender folks frequently feel erased. Generic rainbow merchandise, while well-intentioned, doesn't always speak to the specific experience of having no gender.

That’s why we created the Agender Justice Tarot Card in our Major Arcana Collection. Inspired by the Major Arcana card "Justice," this design uses the agender flag colors (black, white, gray, green) in an abstract, organic pattern. It’s not just a flag, but an affirmation that your identity is valid, worthy of beauty, and deserving of a visible place in the world.
